STINA HELLBERG AGBACK
JONAS ISAKSSON QUARTET

Quiet Now

Swedish jazz harp player Stina Hellberg Agback and jazz guitarist Jonas Isaksson team up again for their second full-length album, Quiet Now, tackling the rich compositions of Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and others. Both being two full-register string instruments, the harp and guitar essentially compete for the same frequency spectrum, so needless to say, any successful simultaneous performance between the two require thoughtful, balanced and attentive musical interplay to begin with. Hellberg Agback and Isaksson possess that enviable skill, which is well on display throughout this imaginatively arranged jazz album, as melody, chords and bass seem to flow seamlessly between them, intermittently sprinkled by way of intrepid improvisation. Bassist Pär-Ola Landin and drummer Daniel Olsson help to propel the energy of this powerful and nuanced quartet. This may well be the very first jazz recording on harp of Coltrane's and Shorter's music. Heartily recommended!
