BEAT FUNKTION

Live At The Baked Potato

In the fall of 2014, Beat Funktion did their very first tour of the United States, timed with their then recent release of their fourth album Mandy's Secret, the third to attain high placements on the American and Canadian radio charts. As the last stop of their tour, Beat Funktion ended up at the legendary jazz and fusion venue The Baked Potato in Los Angeles, deep in the heart of Hollywood, and recorded this highly spontaneous, playful and energetic concert, captured by a strategically placed Zoom stereo microphone. Due to delayed visa procedures, regulars Karl Olandersson, Olle Thunström and Pal Johnson were here replaced by the excellent Jonathan Bradley on trumpet, Jonathan Rowden on tenor sax and Nicholas Faria Lima Soderstrom on bass. While the band's trademark dance-floor funk vibes are on full display here, the three American substitutes imbue the music with a slightly jazzier and expressionistic vibe, in turn procuring an edgier jazz approach with stalwarts Öijen, Lantz and Eriksson. Beat Funktion, one out of very few Swedish bands to have played at The Baked Potato, here turn out an immensely inspired set where their music takes on a few surprising twists.
