BEAT FUNKTION

Live At Nefertiti

In the early part of 2017, Beat Funktion was hot on the heels from releasing Green Man, in the wake of multiple number one-hits on the jazz charts in the US and Canada, from albums Voodooland, Mandy's Secret and Olympus. Sweden's most revered jazz venue on the east coast, Fasching, had by then welcomed the band a number of times, but for some reason, the band had never played at Nefertiti, the west coast equivalent of Fasching. This live recording in stereo by the house sound engineer, captures the band at their most playful, during the premiere gig at Nefertiti in January 2017, and it's a cooking set. As the announcer asks in the introduction, "have you brought your dancing shoes?", because this is one hard-swinging session, in front of a packed house, showcasing the band's trademark dance-floor vibes. As soloists, Olandersson, Thunström and Öijen are on fire, propelled by the super-tight rhythm consisting of Lantz, Johnson and Eriksson, all luxuriously graced by the tasteful percussion of Brazilian Tiago Loei. In addition to the hot numbers Kareem, Mangroove and Thunström's The Great Escape, the band indulges in some sensitive balladry through the exquisite Lorelei and Are We Done? Enjoy the band live as they expand upon the studio versions of the songs with spontaneously combusting energy and surprising twists and turns.
